Occurs in lentic and lotic freshwater bodies (Ref. 7300). Inhabits turbid water of gently flowing rivers and waterholes. Capable of withstanding high temperatures and brackish water conditions (10 p.p.t. salinity). Carnivorous, feeds on small fishes, crustaceans and worms. Breeds during summer flooding; pelagic eggs are released after an upstream migration and hatch in about 30 hours. Sexual maturity is reached at a length of about 24-28 centimeters. One of few good angling species available in the arid interior of the continent (Ref. 44894).
