South America: Paraguay River basin in Brazil and Paraguay.
Biology: The species was reported to swim near the bottom to feed, substrate containing food are scooped and ingested. Stomach content with diatoms, desmids, and epiphytic filamentous algae. Apparently territorial, guarding areas with submerged grassy plants with algal cover, defending with chases, nips, strikes, and mouth fighting. May form schools of up to 30 individuals. Also reported to occur in small streams or places of weak currents in adjoining swampy areas. Captured along banks of rivers (Ref. 11334).
