Oceania: known only from the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia (specimens collected from the Prince Regent River drainage, 260 km north of Derby).
Biology: Inhabits rocky pools, mostly in crevices along the shallow margins. Sexual dimorphism: F of smaller size and light colors with dorsal fins well separated; M larger size, prolonged posterior and anal ray, rounded caudal fin, posterior membrane of first dorsal fin reaches almost to the second. Reproduction: direct pairing with demersal, adhesive eggs laid on bottom after male has selected spawning site, male guards eggs until hatching (Ref. 2906, 44894). Breeding habits are probably similar to those of H. compressa (Ref. 44894).
