Indian Ocean: widely distributed, extending to Cape Agulhas, South Africa.
Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 4 - 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 17; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 21 – 28. Translucent with silver lower head and band along side to silver spot on caudal peduncle and viscera enclosed in silver.
Biology: Found in large numbers in boiling surf, close to shoreline.
