Atlantic, Indian and Pacific: in tropical and subtropical waters. Eastern Central Atlantic: known from four stations approximately 09°N to 18°S, unknown from the Benguela Current/Gulf of Guinea area. Known from widely scattered localities extending from off Baja California in the eastern Pacific to the Yucatan Channel in the western central Atlantic.
Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 11 - 13; Dorsal soft rays (total): 22 - 24; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 21 – 25
Biology: The shallowest depth record is based on a single Gargaropteron-staged individual which was taken in the Yucatan Channel, in 0-124 m (Museum: RHB 1290).
