Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 8 - 8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7 - 8; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 7; Vertebrae: 31. No head lateral line canals; interorbit with uniserial row of papillae flanking each orbit; scales restricted to axillary patch; D1 VII, D2 I/8. Males with several vertical bars, varying in intensity.
Biology: A short-lived species which typically occurs in springs of constant water temperature and slow current, on sand or gravel with or without vegetation; it may also be found in silty areas, provided that the water remains clear. Feeds on invertebrates. Is threatened due to water abstraction and habitat destruction (Ref. 26100).
