Europe: Lives in the large lakes and rivers of northern Italy and in the Danube's middle and upper reaches. In Appendix III of the Bern Convention (protected fauna).

Biology: |
Lives in slow-flowing rivers and in the deeper portions of lakes. Spawning occurs in April-May among weeds in moderately shallow water. Each female lays 35,000-60,000 eggs depending on size. This fish feeds on worms, mollusks, crustaceans and considerable amounts of plant matter.
