Western Atlantic: Florida, USA and Bahamas to Brazil. Eastern Atlantic: Senegal to Angola, including Cape Verde and Annobon.
Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 3 - 4. Tan, olive, or red-brown above, pale below, with scattered rounded, dark red-brown to black spots on head and body (Ref. 26938).
Biology: A solitary species (Ref. 26340) found around reefs and rocky areas. Adults are said to prefer clearer waters than juveniles (Ref. 7320).
